A man is his principles.

Duh.

Throb. Twiddle. Tweek.

I picked this up from the Hacker's Jargon file.

There are three levels of learning, three levels of focus, three levels of action. They are throb, twiddle, and tweek.

Throb
When you do something for the sheer fun of it, you are throbbing. Doodling on paper is an example of throbbing.
Twiddle
When you've progressed enough to have some skill, you begin tweeking. Drawing rough figures and getting a feel for proportions is an example of twiddling.
Tweek
You start tweeking when you've begun working on the fine details.

Another example: Looking at a painting because you like art is throbbing. Learning about basic art styles and seeing them in use is twidding. Noticing the fine details in a specific artist's technique is tweeking.

Throb. Twiddle. Tweek. is universal and operates everywhere there is learning, focus, or action.

Double bonus points: Consider how this relates to trial and error.

Boredom killz.

Freekin' obvious. See "When in doubt, turn left.", "Do or DIE!", and "Everything is discovery." for the cure.

Everything is discovery.

This is a new one. It fits in with "Everything is a gap." which I'll write about sooner or later.

Everything results from discovery. You can verify and use what you've discovered, but the origin is always discovery of something you didn't know before. If you want to grow as a person, do and learn something new. Another way to put this is "Discovery opens doors."

It is, or it isn't.

There are only two states. Is. Or is not. There are only two kinds of measurements. Analog or digital. Digital measurements are either is or is not. Analog measurements are within a range of values, for example 1 to 100. Even with an analog measurement, it is at a certain point or not. In other words, black and white exist even in gray.

A Thanksgiving Blessing

1259314473|%e %b %Y, %H:%M %Z|agohover

I do great funerals. I get funerals. Ask me to do a funeral and the mourners leave feeling a little bit better about the dearly departed than when they arrived.

Ask or allow me to do any other kind of public speaking and heh. :)

The actual Thanksgiving Blessing I gave at my family's Thanksgiving Dinner was as follows :

"Lord, I'd like to thank you with something high-fidelity. A Youtube video or something else broadband. But, I'm stuck on dialup at the moment so : (30 seconds of badly imitated dialup noise here). Allrighty. The lord knows what's up. He says 'Hi'. Let's eat."

Do or DIE!

1259220180|%e %b %Y, %H:%M %Z|agohover

Do or DIE! is my ultimate Shawnism. Rather than explaining it, here's some other sayings / proverbs, quotes, etc.

  • It's now or never.
  • It's on.
  • All we have to fear is fear itself.
  • You, my friend, are riding the weasel.
  • Each time we face our fear, we gain strength, courage, and confidence in the doing.
  • What we seek we shall find; what we flee from flees from us.
  • Fear of failure must never be a reason not to try something.
  • Always do what you are afraid to do.
  • You block your dream when you allow your fear to grow bigger than your faith.
  • He who is not everyday conquering some fear has not learned the secret of life.
  • Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear.
  • Ultimately we know deeply that the other side of every fear is freedom.
  • Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.
  • There are four ways you can handle fear. You can go over it, under it, or around it. But if you are ever to put fear behind you, you must walk straight through it. Once you put fear behind you, leave it there.

See also, The Litany Against Fear:

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.

Full credit, stole it from Richard, the same guy who gave the world Aristotle Jones.2

Yet Another Shawnism

1259205083|%e %b %Y, %H:%M %Z|agohover

The only certainty is uncertainty.

We humans are itty-bitty little1 nuggets of sapien in a very large universe that not only staggers the imagination — it can't be imagined!23

As itty-bitty little4 nuggets of sapien in a very56 large universe that we can't possibly understand, we can't know everything that's going on that can affect us. In other words, because we're soooo damn small78 and unimportant9 we can easily be completely and totally screwed by things we didn't know about.

There could be a meteorite headed towards your head right now.

Have a nice day. :)
